Directions to the GECD Office (12-172)

Walking from the Kendall Square T stop:

  1. Exit the MBTA subway (the T) at the Main Street exit (you will see the COOP and a Marriott Hotel when you get to street level).
  2. Head west down Main Street past the MIT COOP and the Legal Seafoods restaurant (this is a right if you took the T from the direction of downtown Boston and a left if you took it from Cambridge or Somerville).
  3. Turn left on to Ames Street (At the first set of lights).
  4. Continue on Ames Street until you get to the large crosswalk and the building on your right that looks like a pie wedge (Building 66, the Landau Building).
  5. Enter the Landau Building and walk all the way down the hallway, through the breezeway, to the end of the next hallway (you will see signs for Buildings 16, 56, and 66 as you pass through).
  6. At the very end of the hall, you will see a set of glass doors in front of you and stairs to your left. Go up the stairs one flight and enter the doorway on your left into Building 8.
  7. Go through the hall until it intersects with a larger hallway and take a right down this hallway (also known as the Infinite Corridor).
  8. Walk down this hallway until you come to the next intersection of hallways. At this intersection, take a right (you will see the Building 4 Coffee Shop on the corner).

Parking at MIT

Parking in Cambridge and Boston is quite difficult due to limited space. Visitors who drive to MIT should note that MIT has no visitor parking available. You can park your car at the hotel where you are staying and use public transportation to get to the MIT campus. If you must drive to the campus, there are both on- and off-street parking spots available, but most public parking is not very close to the center of campus (unless you arrive very early in the morning or late in the evening).

Street Parking

You will find metered parking on Vassar Street and Memorial Drive, but these spots fill up early (often by 8 a.m.) To find a spot near the main buildings, you will need to arrive by 7 a.m. Main Street and Mass. Ave. (in front of MIT) have one- and two-hour parking meters. Parking along Main Street or Massachusetts Avenue will mean regular trips to pay the parking meter. Albany Street and Portland Street have free and two-hour parking. During the workday, Memorial Drive, Albany, Portland, and Main Streets are the best options. After the workday, finding a parking spot isn't nearly as hard; night and weekend parking near campus is generally not difficult to locate.
